The British Fashion Council was formed in 1983 out of the Fashion Industry Action Group, an ad hoc group created in 1981. The British Fashion Council aims to showcase British designers and develop London’s position as a major player in the international fashion arena. As a result, London Fashion Week
ranks alongside New York, Milan and Paris as one of the 'Big Four’.

Alongside these platforms to promote the very best of our designer fashion, we work behind the scenes in a number of vital ways to support the fashion industry. Through our BFC Colleges Council initiative, we form a link between the industry and fashion graduates from the UK’s leading colleges. Meanwhile, thanks to a series of important sponsorship schemes including the MA Scholarship, NEWGEN and Fashion Forward, we are able to provide support to emerging British fashion designers. These schemes range from business mentoring and seminars to competitions and sponsorship.

In addition, we also organise the annual British Fashion Awards
. This prestigious event is a unique opportunity for the designer fashion industry to celebrate and reward the extraordinary design talents and business successes within the sector. In PR terms it ranks alongside other leading creative industry awards such as the film industry’s BAFTAS and the music industry’s BRITS.
Throughout 2009 we marked our 25th year with a series of events and initiatives which took the BFC into a new era. These were unveiled at No. 10 Downing Street during London Fashion Week September 2008 and included the BFC Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, the Fashion Industry Report, and the launch and development of Britishfashioncouncil.com.
This website provides access and guidance to all our initiatives. It will develop to become a wider resource for designers and aspiring designers. Our ultimate aim is to develop britishfashionccouncil.com into an industry portal.
